In my research for my Terminator Genisys review, things got so convoluted with the timeline I had to write it down to keep track of it. I figured I would share it to see if anyone can help me make sense of it. This is assuming the stance on these films is that the future is inevitable so nothing you do can effect it because that’s the only way it makes sense. Despite the fact that this is the only way it makes sense, they continue to send robots back in time to try and change it.
1984- The original T-800 arrives and starts killing people. Kyle Reese is sent back, impregnates Sarah Connor, and dies. A computer chip and arm of the terminator is discovered which leads to the creation of Skynet. The peasants rejoice.
1995- The T-1000 arrives and does battle with the T-800. All future technology is destroyed. Judgment Day is stopped. Skynet still launches? Doesn’t matter. The peasants rejoice.
2004- The T-X arrives and does battle with the T-850. Judgment Day occurs. The peasants are indifferent, but enjoy boobs.
2018- The first T-800 is created.
2029- Skynet, on the verge of losing the war, uses it’s last ditch effort to send the Terminator back in time to kill the mother of the leader of the resistance. The resistance sends back one person to try and stop it. Why don’t they send two? Or three? Or a whole platoon?
2029- Since that didn’t work, Skynet (Somehow still active) sends a more advanced terminator back in time. Despite losing the war, Skynet is able to make a more advanced Terminator. Also, despite the fact that the new model is not encased in organic tissue it’s able to make it through the time machine. They send the T-1000 back in time to kill a young John Connor. Not as a baby, when he would be ultimately vulnerable, or as a toddler, or as a small child, but as a teenager. The resistance sends a reprogrammed terminator to protect him.
“Wait a minute… how come we never sent back more than one?”
2032- Since that didn’t work, Skynet (Somehow still active) sends a more advanced terminator back in time. The important thing to remember here is that Skynet kills John Connor, but still needs to send a terminator back in time. Unable to locate John in the past (Locate him how? Their crystal ball?), they send the T-X back to kill other important members of the resistance. The resistance reprograms the terminator that killed John to go back and protect him. Instead of going back in time a day and stopping John from dying, they send it back to 2004.
2029- Since that didn’t work, Skynet (Somehow still active) sends a T-1000 back in time to kill Sarah Connor as a child. The resistance sends a reprogrammed terminator to protect her.
1970 something- After killing Sarah Connor’s parents, the T-800 is able to stop the T-1000 (Unexplained and off camera) and raises Sarah as it’s own.
2029- Since that didn’t work, Skynet (Somehow still active), sends a less advanced terminator back in time to kill Sarah Connor in 1984. The resistance sends Kyle Reese back. As he’s going back in time, Skynet captures John Connor and turns him into a machine, effectively ending the war. For some reason they also send a T-1000 back to kill Reese. Skynet then sends the Termiconnor back to 2017 to help create Skynet.
1984- Having a good decade to lay a trap, Sarah and her terminator Pops get the jump on the original T-800 and destroy it. They then lure the T-1000 into an elaborate trap (Despite the fact that there should have been no warning that the T-1000 would have been there). This might make sense if the T-1000 that killed Sarah’s parents wasn’t destroyed but that would mean it’s been hunting her unsuccessfully for around a decade and nobody’s noticed. Also, if that were true it shouldn’t have advance knowledge of where and when Kyle Reese is going to pop in. Also, Sarah and Pops have built a time machine that takes them forward to…
2017- Having apparently created an altered timeline, they must now stop the Genisys program from launching because it will evolve into Skynet. They are unsuccessful. Also, John Connor has not been conceived yet. Even if they have sex now, by the time 2029 rolls around he’ll be eleven years old and presumably unable to lead the rebellion. This will also make it impossible for Skynet to turn him into a machine and send him back in time to create it.
…did I miss anything?
